Fantastic Friday #6

It is that Fantastic day of the week again . . . Friday. (and it happens to be my oldests birthday - so we have a big party planned for later today and then another one again tomorrow!) But anyway, I hope that you all have had a fabulous week! I have got so much done - and any week is good when that happens.

Last weeks party was a great success - 32 projects! It was so fun to look through all of them and find some awesome inspiration! It was super hard to chose something to feature this week, but I chose this headboard made into a bench. Lindsay from Diary of a Crafty Lady made this - and wow, she is all that!
Tell me that is not clever!? And I am on a little bit of a furniture kick, I have been scouring the thrift stores around here looking for things that I can make over - nothing too excited yet.

Valentines

I was thumbing through a scrapbook magazine the other day and came across a this great idea! I practically had everything I needed - well minus the suckers. And I forgot to take a picture of the process, lucky for you it is super easy!! Which was really one of the reasons that I did this.

Supplies you need:
suckers
various colors of tissue paper
scallop circle punch
green cardstock with sentiment printed on it

You take your cardstock and punch out a whole lot of scallop circles. It is best if you do at least 10 sheet at a time. Using less makes it not punch as well, and more just doesn't punch.

After you have like 100 of those scallop circles punch a small hole in the center of them. Again about 10 sheets at a time works great. I used between 10-20 punches for each sucker.

You then insert your sucker stick into the hole and slide the scallop circles up to the bottom of the sucker. I scrunched mine a bit to make it look like a flower. Repeat for something like 50 suckers - really this is just how many me and my kids made. ;)

In a wordprocessing software create a sentiment - 'Be my Valentine'. I used a text box and got about 16 per page. You want to make sure that you can cut a leaf out and have a good sized space on the left side of it to stick the flower and still see the sentiment. Print.

I eyeballed the leaf I wanted and just cut these out. I made Thing #2 cut her own leaves - she was super excited!

In the good sized space you have on the left hand side punch a hole and stick the sucker through it.  Now you have a great easy valentine! Oh and have your child sign their name before you stick the leaf on - much easier that way!

Next I have two cards to share with you. My first one is completely copied from Then She Made. I just fell in love with the simpleness and beauty of hers that I had to make one myself. Go to her blog to she her version.

It not that just simple and perfect!?

This one here is for Conan. I saw something like this a couple of years ago, but I cannot remember exactly where. But obviously I liked it if I remembered it still. It was also super easy to make.

First I took my card base - Kraft cardstock - and distressed the edges with a red ink pad.

Then I got a piece of cardstock that looked like paper. I glued that in the top middle.

I printed the words 'You're Hot' because I had no stamps that would work. I stamped the curly label in red and punched out. I distressed the words you're hot so that they would stand out more. At this point I had run out of glue, I wanted to finish so I broke out the kids white school glue. I glued these on.

You should really wait for the glue to dry here, like I did not. You can see the smudge up by you're. I am just not used to using liquid glue.

Anyway, cut a square of plastic from a lunch sack slightly bigger than your paper cardstock. Place over and sew 3 edges with red thread. Do not pull tight as you want to stick a few red hots in there. Add red hots and sew shut. Sew around edges a couple of times until it looks good. Done!

There you have it, super easy last minute valentines!

Olivia Bag

I just love bags - don't we all?! There is just something about them that completes a look. I especially love getting a good deal on them. This one here I just got the other day for $6! I just love it! It is a little bit bigger than what I normally use, but I still love it just the same. And it would be no fun if I had bags that were all the same kind!
Anyway, I work with the youth in my church and the other night one of them had this bag that I just fell in love with. It was the perfect size for notebooks or school books. It was no too big - but just right! Well I liked it so much I took some rough measurements and went home and made a pattern for it. This is the end result here:

I then got to sewing . . . a couple of interruptions, one sewing machine needle, and a few days later I was done. I was going to leave it plain, but when I laid it out after cutting it, I thought that it looked too plain. So I cut a flower out with my cricut onto contact paper and placed it where I wanted it onto the front part of the bag.
I then painted it the same color as the inside of the bag.
I then had to very carefully pull the contact paper off and viola! I had a custom stenciled bag. Another cheap and easy stencil.
Now that I am looking at it I think that it needs a little something. I am thinking of adding some yellow flowers to the stencil. Those puffy ones that are made out of circles. I am not sure yet though. What do you think, should I leave it as is, or add that little bit extra?
Here is the inside of the bag, I added a pocket with a zipper - I am not a huge fan of sewing zippers so that was a big step for me. I do like that feature though. And there is a simple magnetic clasp to close it.

I am working out the kinks on the pattern, but if you want one I am going to list it in my Etsy shop when I have it all done.

Very Versatile

Natalie from over at A Turtle's Life for Me, recently awarded me with the Very Versatile Blogger Award. I thought that was so sweet of her and I was just thrilled that she choose me! YEA!!!

As part of this award you are supposed to share seven random facts about you . . . well we are going to highlight the random here because I had a hard time coming up with seven when I was stylin'.

1. I really dislike to iron. I pretty much never iron clothes. If Conan needs something ironed he does it himself because it is quicker than having me do it. However, I am getting better at it because all my quilts turn out so much cuter when I have ironed them.

2. Ever since I got married eons ago, the longest we have lived anywhere is 2 years. We are now getting close to 2years here and I feel like we have lived here forever. It does help with not having a lot of crap laying around, but at the same time I would love to live in the same place for the rest of my life.

3. My favorite craft thing to do is sew. I have about 10 sewing projects going at one time because then when I get sick of looking at a certain fabric or it just does not go my way anymore I can move onto something else.

4. Even though we have moved a lot I am a hoarder. When I paper scrapbooked I would get paper and supplies and just not want to use them. Now I have more of a fabric hoarding problem. But I am trying to use what I have and not by anything new. So far so good.

5. My favorite thing to drink is water. I do not care for soda at all, and I don't drink milk. I drink water like a fish.

6. I love to take pictures. I even did it semi-professional for a little while. Which explains nothing when you look at my crappy pictures on here, but I don't like to use my uber-nice camera all the time - so I use the other one. When my baby hears the flash click open he immediately looks up and smiles. Gotta love that. ;)

7. I love shoes - I think enough is said right there.

Anyway, I will get back to you on those who I choose to pass this along to. I always find it so hard to pick because I love so many. But thank you Natalie for this award.

Pie Filling Bars

It has been insanely cold here. And when it is cold I like to cook. To be more precise I like to bake. This week I have done my fair share of baking, and so I have a great treat for you today.

These are called Pie Filling Bars, and I love them for many reasons - one being that depending on the kind of pie filling you have these can be totally different every time you make them! I actually made these with apple pie filling in December for my cookie exchange, because they make a lot quickly!

Pie Filling Bars:
1 C butter
1 3/4 C sugar
4 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
3 C flour
1 large can pie filling - any flavor

Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs and vanilla, mix well. Then mix in flour and baking powder.

Spread 2/3 of dough in 11 x 17 inch pan.
Spoon the pie filling over the top.
From remaining dough drop teaspoons over the top of pie filling using all the dough. (I am sure you can tell I did not use teaspoons - this is what happens when you have your kids help you.)
Bake in pre-heated oven at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.
Drizzle with frosting if desired - I usually do not do this step, but it is really good when you make it with apple pie filling.  ENJOY!
Even though these made a lot, they still did not last long at my house with all the kids home from school!
